First Star Institute Press Release Best Practice Project

Washington, D.C.—The First Star Institute, a national non-profit organization, is conducting a survey on college programs for foster youth and former foster youth. With only three percent of foster youth completing their college degree, First Star Institute aims to identify the most effective practices within higher education that advance the success of these students.

To ensure a range of information and input, the initial First Star Institute survey will be sent to more than 600 public U.S. colleges, and additional surveys are planned.

Opportunities and success in higher education for foster youth are hindered by complex federal mandates, varying state programs, puzzling financial aid forms, personal development obstacles and more. The Institute aims to highlight the most effective practices for college success of foster youth and former foster youth.

The First Star Institute, founded in 2015, envisions a world where abused and neglected children have the support and tools to address under-education, unemployment and homelessness. The Institute's programs promote best practices for foster youth in college, support access to information and leverage change through collaboration.
